A man who was paralysed for 20 years is walking again thanks to the miracle of Botox.
Aussie meat worker Russell McPhee thought he would die in his wheelchair after being paralysed by a stroke at the age of 26.
Now, at 49, he can walk for up to 20m at a stretch, and 100m with a walking stick, after a series of injections with botulinum toxin, otherwise know as Botox.
Now the celebrities' cosmetic surgery of choice, Botox was originally used to treat muscle spasms.
Mr McPhee was urged to try Botox after an old school friend recommended a rehabilitation specialist to him.
The doctor, Nathan Johns, said Botox worked by relaxing the affected muscles.
He said the treatment worked due to Mr McPhee's repeated attempts to climb out of the wheelchair over the past 20 years
"Russell had unusually good muscle power despite the fact that he had been in a wheelchair for so long," he told Times Online.
Mr McPhee started the treatment 18 months ago and began to see results within 10 days.
Three months later, he took his first steps out of the wheelchair unaided.
