A US man has successfully sued his own mother for causing him to cut off his finger by telling him his lunch was ready.

John Garrity was installing floorboards in his mother's home in Wayne when she told him his lunch was ready.

Mr Garrity, 40, told the New Jersey court that in the act of turning around quickly, his little finger slipped into the path of a miter saw, severing it.

His mother admitted her actions caused the injury and was ordered to pay her son more than $95,000 in damages and $20,000 in medical expenses.

Mr Garrity had orginally sought more than $190,000, but the court decided he was 50 per cent responsible for his own injury.

People Behaving Badly

"There's nowt as queer as folk" said someone once in a suitably heavy rural British accent, no doubt with a wise shake of the head.
