Amazon said digital books ordered for its Kindle electronic reader can now be read on personal computers.

Amazon will from next month offer a free software download that converts Kindle books to PC-readable ones.

The move is intended to help Kindle keep pace with what looks to be its main rival, Barnes and Noble's Nook, launched this week, which has a similar function.

The latest e-reader from Sony is also compatible with PCs.
